Marx Baltimore & Ohio Diesel train set with 2 switches, crossing gate, track

  

A nice antique Marx diesel train set in good but "played with" condition (playwear is apparent but not overwhelming). Probably an antique from the 1950s. Possibly parts of Marx Train Set No.

9554A with extra track and 2 working switches. Certainly not a complete set, but not bad! This antique Marx diesel train set includes. Locomotives - (2) Baltimore & Ohio Diesels (one of which is powered and lighted), Blue/Silver. 37956 Pennsylvania, with 2 working sliding side doors.

Caboose - (1) C505 Baltimore & Ohio. Twelve (12) sections of straight track, 1 with lock-on/wires. Eight (8) sections of curved track. Two (2) working mechanical switches (curving / straight choices). One (1) remote electrical crossing gate (untested to see if it raises / lowers) - missing 1 nut for electrical wire connection.

It is very difficult to find this set with its beautiful blue and silver colors. I find the graphics quite striking; I would characterize it as being a light Prussian blue. Criticism : This is not a pristine-condition collector's piece, but is still quite attractive.

I have done brief testing and found the transformer and track to work; however, the locomotive with the electric engine lights up and reacts to power being applied, but does not move. All engines and cars are equipped with working rolling stock (wheels) and couplers.

Locomotives are missing some of their plastic air horns (one of four is present). Two (2) of the clips which hold the rolling stock frame to the body of the mechanized engine are loose and require rebending to make the body attachment fully secure; diesel engine electric motor needs to be serviced to be operational.

A little rust here and there. Remote crossing gate appear intact but is untested.

Overall set is quite dusty and requires a good cleaning / polishing. Overall impression : I love this set, taking into consideration that it is over 60 years old and was a child's toy.

Not perfect, but quite striking in its unusual blue-colored engines and caboose! Consider cleaning it and restoring / servicing the electric locomotive; or enjoy it as is! A difficult item to find! (Please note we do occasionally light our Vermont Castings woodstove).
